TESCO has lost its battle to put up a giant illuminated sign at the new Greenfield store.
The supermarket giant had angered locals by erecting an 18ft sign last month without permission, claiming it was merely installing the sign in a bid to provide evidence for the planning application.
There were 33 letters of objection saying there was no need for the sign, its was too tall, was an eyesore, would impact on highway safety and be detrimental to the character of the area. Councillor John McCann said existing signs already lit could be seen across the village.
He added: “If this sign is lit it will be a hazard for traffic. I really do think this is one sign too many.”
Councillor Mike Buckley said: “I think this is a real detriment to the village. The sign is just awful.”
Councillor Steve Bashforth said: “I have to agree its offensive.”
Councillors voted to refuse on the grounds of visual amenity in terms of the sign’s mass, illumination and design.
