Swine flu claims two lives
Date published: 14 December 2010
SWINE flu has claimed the lives of two men at the Royal Oldham Hospital.
Alan Higgins, Director of Public Health for Oldham, said the men, who were both from Oldham, had serious underlying illnesses, but swine flu was a factor in their deaths.
Mr Higgins refused to give any further details about the men, including their ages or the dates on which they died, on the grounds of patient confidentiality.
Mr Higgins urged people over the age of 65, or with a long-term condition, carers and pregnant women to make sure they have the flu jab.
This year’s vaccine protects against three strains of flu, including H1N1, or swine flu.
Mr Higgins said: “Those at greater risk of developing serious complications from flu should contact their local GP practice as soon as possible to arrange a flu job to protect themselves from the virus in the months to come.”
Those considered “at risk” include those with heart, chest or breathing problems, people with a kidney or liver disease, or a lowered immunity due to disease or treatment.
