A CASH windfall to help preserve the Roman Forts in Castleshaw has been welcomed.
More than £15,000 of funding has been granted after a bids from newly established community group Friends of Castleshaw Roman Forts were submitted to enable the preservation of the local landmark.
Nestled on the edge of the Peak District National Park, the forts are classed as a scheduled ancient monument and are on land owned by United Utilities.
The aim of the new project is to future-proof the forts and improve the understanding and enjoyment of the site for visitors.
English Heritage is handing over £10,000 for the project, while the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership last week has pledged £5,000 to the cause.
Councillor Mike Buckley said: “This project will see improved signs and access to the site to make it more visible for visitors.
“I think it is worthwhile.”
The money was applied for by the Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit of behalf of the new group, which will approach the Saddleworth Parish Council for further funding early next year.
