Hey, big spenders

SHOPPERS turned out in force on Boxing Day — bagging bargains to drive some stores to top the region’s sales figures.
Spindles and the Town Square shopping centres were packed with shoppers on the hunt for knockdown prices, and motorists queued back on to Broadway, waiting for empty parking spaces at the Elk Mill Centre Retail Park.
Town centre streets were buzzing as shoppers trawled through sales rails.
Town Centre manager Sara Hewitt said: “Many retailers reported strong sales, despite the restricted Sunday trading hours.”
She said both Monday and yesterday remained busy, adding: “It was a real boost for retailers after the recent bad weather affected pre-Christmas trade.”
Bargain-hunters kept the tills ringing with fashion buys and discounted Christmas goods.
Sara also said discount stores and Tommyfield Market traders had done particularly well.
“Some discount stores report top-of-region sales figures, which is excellent news and re-inforces Oldham’s position as a key shopping destination in the conurbation,” she said.
Many Oldham retailers have pledged to continue extended opening hours throughout December and into January.
And there should still be plenty of bargains left for late sales-goers, with some of the town centre’s independent retailers yet to start their sales.
