HOWZAT . . . Labour’s by-election candidate Debbie Abrahams and husband John meet young cricketers
Election 2011
WITH England steaming ahead in the fifth and final Ashes Test, an election candidate met budding cricket stars.
Debbie Abrahams, Labour’s candidate for the by-election, attended a sports and social session at Kaly’s Sports Centre in Havelock Street, Oldham, while on the campaign trail.
She was joined by husband John, a former Lancashire County Cricket Club captain who is England’s under-19s cricket manager.
He led a nets session with juniors and seniors from Friarmere Cricket Club and Glodwick Cricket Club.
Mrs Abrahams said: “I was delighted to bring John with me. We saw some great players and who knows one of them might be involved in the Ashes in the future.
“The country is celebrating the England team’s fantastic success in Australia and there’s a real feel good atmosphere about the sport.
“But there’s a real lack of sports training and leisure facilities for people in this borough, that’s why clubs supported by places like these are so important. They do a fantastic job and are training the stars of tomorrow.”
