SHUT down . . . angry staff say they are still owed wages by tenant Joseph Borg after working at the doomed club
ANGRY staff at a former town centre club say they are yet to be paid thousands of pounds in wages still owed to them.
Club UN was shut down in November, last year, after a mass brawl.
Tenant Joseph Borg has now left the town, but his frustrated staff say they have been left out of pocket and are being ignored when they try to get in touch.
Formerly known as Livingstones and then Mink, Club UN was only open for three weeks with more than 20 staff working from 10pm until 5am.
One employee, who did not want to be named, said: “They said it was like a family. They said they would show us respect if we showed them respect.
“It was all lies, all rubbish.People like this are operating in this industry and it’s wrong.
“Everyone worked hard, they wanted to make it a success — we feel massively betrayed.”
Staff say the amount could run into thousands. They even worked extra hours in a bid to promote the club and make it a success.
Some have been partly paid for their work, but others are still left high and dry.
Another former employee, who also wanted to remain anonymous, said: “It all seemed very professional at the time but we haven’t heard anything since. I don’t think we’ll get our money.”
The bar worker, who was on duty during during the brawl, admits she was scared.
She said: “I’ve worked in other clubs and seen fights before but nothing like that. It was like every single person was fighting, using table legs and microphone stands as weapons.”
Mr Borg says complications with owners Brook Leisure has resulted in him being short of cash.
He said: “I do owe them money. I have all their names, addresses and phone numbers and I can assure them they will get their money.
“But I can’t say hand-on-heart when they will get it.”
Mr Borg described police claims that the incident was “a riot” were rubbish, dismissing the incident as “run of the mill.”
Brook Leisure were recently awarded their licence back to re-open the club. No date has yet been set.
