Pair raise £1,300 for charity
AN ecstatic pair of pub landlords have been rewarded for their tireless charity efforts.
Rod Smith and Brenda Davidson have only been at the Brewery Tavern in George Street, Oldham, since September, but in that time have managed to raise a staggering £1,300 in charity cash.
They have now beaten off competition from more than 2,000 other landlords nationwide to receive an Admiral Taverns Achievement Award.
The dedicated duo have arranged drag nights, raffles and tombolas in their quest to raise funds for the Pennine Pen Animal Rescue charity.
Rod said: “It has always been a charity close to mine and Brenda’s heart.
“We wanted to raise as much money as possible for them by hosting exciting, varied nights that we knew our customers would enjoy.”
The pair, who used to run the Dog and Duck on St Domingo Street, also donate money from their food profits to charity and are arranging another bonanza fund-raiser on Sunday to co-incide with Brenda’s birthday.
Brenda said: “We’re really pleased that our customers have continued to give so generously to this fantastic cause and are delighted to have received this award in recognition of our fund-raising work.”
Tony Ellis, business development manager for Admiral Taverns, said: “Rod and Brenda are fantastic role models for anyone who’s ever wanted to run a pub.
“Their fun-loving approach to running the Brewery Tavern has established the pub as the hub of the community and has also seen them make a valuable contribution to this worthy charity.”
Donation opens up a whole new world
A GRAND donation has helped an Oldham charity transform the lives of deaf people.
Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation handed over £1,200 to Deafblind UK, which opened its 27th branch in town earlier this year.
The charity, which offers specialist services and human support to mainly elderly people with combined sight and hearing loss, used the funds to install a portable loop system, enabling members to communicate more effectively in meetings and hear more clearly talks from guest speakers.
