We can still win — Tories

THE Conservatives still have a strong chance of winning the by-election despite opinion polls indicating a Labour victory, according to a senior party member.

Paymaster General Francis Maude MP went on the campaign trail with local Tory candidate Kashif Ali in Glodwick.

The pair dropped leaflets through doors in Waterloo Street and spoke to local business owners to see how they are doing as the country comes out of recession.

Opinion polls conducted by various media show a clear Labour victory but Mr Maude, a Minister for the Cabinet Office and MP for Horsham, said it will be a close contest. He added: “I think there are still a lot of people who haven’t yet made up their mind and I would urge these people to vote for Kashif Ali.

“He cares about the area because he was born and raised in the area. He understands the issues in a way that the other candidates can’t. Anyone wanting to give the Coalition Government their endorsement should vote for Kashif on Thursday.

“Despite what the opinion polls say there is still time to change people’s minds. We all know that it is going to be a close election. In May, just 2,500 votes separated the top three candidates so it could go either way.”
