OLDHAM sports star Becky Jones, who is stranded in the Austalian floods, fears the death toll could be worse than first thought.
It currently stands at 25, with many more missing, but Becky said: “I think there are a lot more deaths than those that have been reported. There are loads of people missing from Toowoomba alone.”
The 26-year-old has escaped the floods that swept through Toowoomba — and then flooded much of the city of Brisbane — as she lives on a hill in the town.
She has taken in families who have lost everything and all the residents are now pooling their resources.
She said: “We haven’t had any electric for five days, so I haven’t seen the TV but we are getting some info from the SAS but because we are so rural little is getting through.
“We’re at the top of a hill and I’m hoping the road to Ipswich will clear so we can all get out.
“Today I was trying to help a mum who had a six-month-old baby and a three year old. All they have left is three pairs of shoes.
“But really I am one of the lucky ones so I am helping out whoever I can. I’ve only just learned the names of everyone in my house and they’ve been here two days!”
She described how there are snakes, turtles and fish swimming around in the streets and how she watched rapids plough a car through the side of a house.
