‘Morning after’ drink peril
Date published: 20 January 2011
POLICE have issued a stark warning to motorists who drive the morning after a night of boozing.
Officers arrested 32 people from Oldham who gave positive results in breath tests conducted as part of a Greater Manchester Police campaign.
Of 7,500 people breath tested in the county throughout December, 18 per cent of positive tests were recorded between 7am and noon.
Assistant chief constable Neil Wain said: “This year we have used a targeted approach to tackle drink-driving. For the first time we have used roadside operations in areas that have had a high number of drink-driving incidents in the past.
“I am disappointed to see that such a large amount of people are still driving when they are over the limit in the morning.
“I cannot stress how important it is to consider the morning after and arrange alternative transport. For the sake of a bus or train fare, people’s lives are being put at risk.”
Across the county, 413 people were arrested for drink-driving.
