FOUR masked men attempted to break into a Werneth jewellers using a battering ram.
Police were called to Naveed Jewellers on Werneth Hall Road just before noon on Monday.
A VW Black Golf, which had been stolen from the Birmingham area, parked outside the premises and four men wearing balaclavas got out, leaving the driver inside.
They broke into the front door of the jewellers and using a battering ram, they tried to gain access to the main part of the shop but the security system stopped them.
They escaped in the car which was later found burned out on Hereford Street, Werneth.
Det-Con Richard Whiting, from Oldham CID, said: “The men used an aggressive method of trying to get inside the jewellers but luckily the shop’s security system prevented them from doing so and stealing any items.
“All of the men, including the driver, wore balaclavas so we are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen them or the vehicle driving around the area just before midday.
“There were a number of bystanders and we are keen to hear from them.”
