RESIDENTS from across the borough united in respect yesterday to remember the victims of the Holocaust.
Crowds descended on Chadderton Hall to mark the memorial day with a one minute’s silence.
The theme of this year’s event was Untold Stories, and reflected on the harrowing tales from survivors of the Holocaust and genocide since the end of the Second World War.
A powerful film made by Oldham Theatre Workshop during a trip to the Auschwitz concentration camp last year had an impact on those who had gathered to pay their respects.
The event was opened by The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor David Jones, and also showcased the creative work by local youngsters from various schools. Council leader Howard Sykes said: “This is a very important date in the council’s calendar and gives us an opportunity to remember those who were killed. This day of remembrance also gives us the chance to reaffirm our commitment to oppose prejudice, discrimination and racism.
Shaw and Royton also saw well-wishers turn out to mark the occasion, opting to lay stones and pebbles at the war memorials in line with Jewish tradition.
