All county speed cameras are working

DRIVERS in Oldham have been warned that every speed camera across Greater Manchester is fully operational despite conflicting reports.

A study by consumer watchdog Which? claimed that drivers faced a speed-camera lottery because less than half of the nation’s cameras were working at any one time. It also claimed that fewer than 30 of Lancashire’s 287 fixed cameras were primed to take pictures at any one time.

However, Drive Safe, the organisation responsible for speed cameras across Greater Manchester, said every camera in the region was fully operational and maintained.

Karen Delaney, Drive Safe communications manager, said: “Safety cameras have been instrumental in helping to reduce the number of casualties on Greater Manchester’s roads.

“While a 27 per cent reduction in Specific Road Safety Revenue Grant support has been imposed on road-safety partnerships across the country, we are working to accommodate this cut without compromising on safety camera activity within the county.”

She said there was strong public support for safety cameras, adding: “Research highlighted that 63 per cent of Greater Manchester’s motorists think that fewer collisions are likely to happen on roads with safety cameras installed, and 73 per cent believe their primary aim is to save lives.”
