BEST foot forward... the army of walkers head to Crompton Primary School
ENERGETIC youngsters from Crompton Primary School could clock up a combined 1,500 miles as they shun their lifts to school in favour of walking.
The school’s 230 pupils heralded the start of Walk to School Month by pounding the pavements during their early-morning energiser.
A walking army proved a welcome site as mums, pupils and tots joined forces for their daily commute.
Children on the school council have come up with the scheme, acting on the term’s assembly theme — Be Healthy, Be Happy.
Young walkers will collect stamps for their efforts.
The class with the most will eventually be rewarded with an hour’s sports activity of their choice at the end of the month.
Head teacher Martin Moore said: “Walking is one of the simplest and most effective forms of exercise, accessible to all of us.
“The pupils’ scheme will put our discussions into practice.
“Rsearch proves exercise gives children a greater propensity to learn so Walk to School Month should benefit bodies and minds at Crompton Primary School this February.”
Those children who face lengthy commutes are being encouraged to get out of their car early and walk five minutes to the school, while organisers hope it will ease congestion and increase safety outside the Longfield Road school.
