A LAW student is hoping to raise cash for charity by climbing Africa’s highest peak.
Samantha Barnett (19), from Belgrave Avenue, Hathershaw, is all set to tackle the 19,330ft Mount Kilimanjaro.
The former Blue Coat School pupil (left) wants to raise money for the charity COCO (Comrades of Children Overseas) which works with vulnerable children to give them an opportunity for a better quality of life.
While the mountain has little technical climbing, altitude sickness is a major problem for those who tackle it.
Samantha, who sets off at the end of June, said: “I wanted to raise money for a smaller charity so I know the money will go where it is needed, rather than on admin fees and wages.
“This is the first time I’ve done anything like this so I’m a bit anxious. It’s terrifying to think you could be stood on top of a mountain!
“There isn’t any particular training, you just have to be very fit and prepared for the high altitude!
Samantha, who has already raised £400, is taking part in the 10-day venture with her friends from Northumbria University in Newcastle.
