A PETITION has been launched to keep the Beal Hey Recycling Centre open.
Councillor Mark Alcock announced he had set up a Facebook page and a petition as part of his campaign to save the centre at Chandos Street in Shaw.
If he gets permission from the police he will also be staging a protest march through Shaw this weekend as well as handing out petition leaflets.
The Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority is looking to close six centres across Greater Manchester. A decision is expected on March 18.
Councillor Alcock said: “This really is important — lots of people have contacted me for petition sheets.
The borough’s recycling rates have gone up from 15 per cent to 40 per cent in three years which is fantastic. If this centre shuts people will stop recycling which is against what we have been trying to do and will just encourage fly-tipping.”
