TWO Roman Catholic primary schools will disband on August 31 following approval by cabinet.
Our Lady’s RC Primary School in Moorside and Sacred Heart RC Junior, Infant and Nursery School, in Whetstone Hill Road, Derker, will close and a new Roman Catholic primary school created.
The new school will open in September on the Sacred Heart site and will cater for 210 boys and girls aged three to 11, with a 26-place nursery.
Councillor Jack Hulme, cabinet member for children and families, said “Our officers are satisfied and I’m satisfied that all the correct procedures have been carried out.”
£1.1m school tender approved
A £1.1m tender to remodel and refurbish Stoneleigh Primary School, in Vulcan Street has been accepted.
Plans include refurbishing the existing building, creating a new entrance lobby, enlarging the classrooms, creating new toilets and offices, and a new activity room for a playgroup used by several schools. Members agreed the contract should go to Jackson, Jackson and Sons Ltd, of Rochdale.
The money will come from the council’s People, Communities and Society capital programme, as well as Sure Start capital grants and the Area Committee budget.
