A 20-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested in connection with a robbery which left Oldham man Fred Kibblewhite in hospital.
Mr Kibblewhite was savagely beaten for just £34 and a watch, as he returned home from church.
The 58-year-old was attacked in the stairwell of a block of flats in Henshaw Street, Oldham, after the culprit followed him through the security door.
The incident happened around 9.30pm on Saturday, February 12, and police issued an appeal for the help of the public as they mounted a manhunt to find the person responsible.
Mr Kibblewhite was repeatedly punched in the face, around his body and on his legs, and was left with severe injuries to his face and difficulty in walking.
He suffered two deep cuts on his eyebrows, bruising and swelling that caused his eye to close, as his attacker rummaged through his pockets to find cash and a watch.
He was left so terrified by the ordeal he was afraid to go back to his home and went to stay with his sister. He is still receiving hospital treatment for his injuries.
The man arrested on suspicion of robbery has been bailed until next Monday, pending further inquiries.
Mr Kibblewhite had called home after a meeting at St Patrick’s Church, Oldham. He intended to go on to the White House pub, Oldham Edge, for a quiz night, but never made it.
Police are still appealing for help from anyone with any information about the incident, who can call police on 0161-856 9577 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
