A DRIVER from Failsworth had a miraculous escape when he was thrown across the central reservation of the M60 into the path of traffic.

His blue BMW and a green Vauxhall Corsa travelling in the same direction collided between Hollinwood and Ashton on Saturday morning.

Rescuers feared he had suffered serious spinal injuries in the accident which is thought to have been caused by a blow-out. Amazingly, he was not hit by oncoming traffic and was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital with a broken ankle and chest and neck pains.

Two passengers were cut free from from the Corsa, driven by a woman from Failsworth. They are not said to have suffered serious injuries.

An air ambulance was called to the scene was not used. The accident caused miles of tailbacks as the smash at junction 23 (Ashton) at 10.40am closed the motorway in both directions.

Traffic ground to a standstill on Broadway, Chadderton, where one driver said: “Everyone was trying to switch lanes and get through the traffic lights, it was chaos.”
