OLDHAM’S Regional Science Centre has received a £100,000 boost ahead of its launch.
It has received the grant from the Wolfson Foundation which supports excellence in science and medicine, health, education and the arts and humanities.
The King Street centre is set to be launched by Oldham Council and Oldham Sixth Form College on March 24. It will open to students in April and will boast 21 state-of-the-art laboratories.
The centre will be run by Oldham Sixth Form College and will eventually be used by primary school children through to undergraduates, local industry and community groups.
College principal Jayne Clarke said: “We are very grateful to the Wolfson Foundation for the award of this substantial grant, which we feel is further recognition of the national, as well as regional, importance of this unique new centre.
“These additional funds will help us ensure everyone using the Regional Science Centre Oldham enjoys state-of-the-art facilities and an unparalleled learning experience.”
Council leader Howard Sykes added: “This is a further catalyst to this exciting project which exemplifies the ambitions that Oldham Council and its partners have to equip our young people with the skills to succeed in the new economy.”
