Royal cake-maker Rosemary dies at 83
Date published: 15 March 2011
A GREENFIELD cake-maker, who baked for royalty, has passed away aged 83.
Rosemary Critchley made a two-tier cake for the Queen Mother’s 80th birthday in 1980.
She also made a 31st birthday cake for Prince Charles when he visited Ferranti in Hollinwood in 1979 and a pink and yellow cake for Princess Margaret’s official visit to Rochdale in 1981.
Kindhearted Rosemary created a stunning six-tier wedding cake for policeman Stephen Hickling who lost part of his arm following a bomb blast at Catford Police Station in Kent in May 1980.
Rosemary was so moved when she heard that Stephen may have to cancel his wedding to sweetheart Lorraine that she vowed to give them the cake of their dreams should the ceremony go ahead.
Great-grandmother Rosemary leaves behind son David and daughter Ann.
Her funeral will take place at St John’s Church, Hey, on Friday at 10am.
