VISITORS to Dovestone Reservoir will be able to see what else is on offer in Saddleworth thanks to some colourful new additions.
A set of new information boards point passers-by to near-by attractions such as Saddleworth Museum and Art Gallery in Uppermill, the Millgate Arts Centre in Delph, Castleshaw Roman Fort and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
The boards, which have been funded by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and a £1,000 contribution from the council, form part of a wider programme of improvements being carried out by the charity, which manages the site on behalf of United Utilities.
The scheme also includes the introduction of new site wardens and community engagement projects.
As well as guiding visitors to other attractions, the boards contain information about how to get around Saddleworth on public transport.
Work has also been carried out on dry stone walling at near-by Brun Clough car park on the A62 Huddersfield Road near Stanedge.
Sections of the wall have been re-built along the road front and at the main entrance to the car park resulting in a more attractive access point for the popular Pennine Way and bridleway.
Councillor Kay Knox, Cabinet member for leisure, culture, heritage and tourism services, said the two projects would have a significant impact on the visitors and residents alike.
She added: “These schemes are excellent examples of how small investments can have a great positive impact on how people see the area.
“When people see the boards they will be encouraged to stay in the area longer and see what other attractions are on offer.
“In turn, this will benefit small businesses in the area that will be able to attract the passing trade.”
Councillor Barbara Beeley is the community champion for Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership.
She said: “It is our hope that once visitors see what the area has to offer they will then recommend it to family and friends — resulting in an increase in visitor numbers. The work carried out on the dry stone wall at Brun Clough car park has improved its appearance, helping make a better first impression.”
