Mahdlo: search starts for ‘passionate and pioneering’ boss
Date published: 17 March 2011
THE new state-of-the art youth zone, currently under construction in Oldham town centre on the site of the former Marjorie Lees Health Centre, is advertising for a chief executive with a passion for pioneering youth work.
The job, which carries a salary of £50-£55,000, is key to the lasting success of the new club, called Mahdlo by the group of young people who have been heavily involved in its development.
William Lees Jones, chairman of the Oldham Youth Zone board, says that the job of chief executive of Mahdlo is a dream role for somebody.
“To be able to open this fantastic new facility and to be able to put a completely new team in place is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” says Mr. Lees Jones.
“It’s not for the faint hearted though as it will hard work, too.”
The new club, which will be attracting young people from all parts of the borough will also provide positive activities and practical support, especially for those who are disadvantaged.
Mahdlo will open seven nights a week, at weekends and during school holidays.
As well as offering lots of activities such as dance, drama and sport, there will be a chill-out area and one-to-one mentoring, health projects and support for the young unemployed.
The chief executive’s first job will be to build a world-class team that will launch the Mahdlo club in November this year and run it on behalf of the Youth Zone Board.
The chief executive will need to be innovative, articulate and confident and able to establish their credibility with the wider community.
He or she is expected to have managed teams in commercial organisations, the voluntary sector or a local authority environment. They should also be able to inspire others, to smooth relationships and to build trust.
