Driver hit boy and fled

AN uninsured motorist fled the scene of an accident after colliding with a child because he feared for his safety when a large crowd gathered.
Mohammed Wakhar (21), of Union Street West, drove his dad’s car along Lee Street, Oldham, at around 6.45pm on September 9, 2010.
Prosecutor Julie Spaven told Oldham magistrates how Wakhar collided with seven-year old local boy Hussain Ali who had appeared from between parked cars.
The boy was taken to hospital with bruising, swelling and cuts to his head.
After the incident, the road became blocked by a 60-strong crowd who had gathered at the scene.
Wakhar stopped but felt intimidated, so he fled the scene, believing there was no need to call the police, as he had already heard his name mentioned in a phone call to them.
Solicitor Rebecca Romih said: “He had been excited as it was coming up to his Christmas so he took the opportunity to drive his dad’s car.
“The boy ran out from between the cars. Mr Wakhar stopped straight away as he knew the young boy — he was his friend’s son.
“Wakhar became quite fearful that someone would do something to him but accepted he didn’t give his details to anyone. He didn’t realise he had to do that.”
Police turned up at his home and Wakhar admitted he was the driver.
For failing to stop and report the incident, driving without insurance or correct licence, Wakhar was fined £162, with £100 costs.
He was disqualified from driving for nine months.
