Magicians under Mike’s spell for another year

Date published: 28 March 2011

Mike Sharples has been installed as president of The Order of The Magi, Manchester’s Magicians’ Society — for the second time.

Mike, from Royton, who held the post in the 100-year-old organisation in 2004, is also secretary and for the next 12 months he will cover both roles.

Members of the Magi enjoy lectures, demonstrations, auctions, competitions and social events.

And it’s a family affair as his wife Nikki is an honorary member of the society and their two children, Dan (20), and Rebecca (18) also help out.

Dan has acted as stage manager to the society for five years and Rebecca, who is studying A Levels, provides a photo and graphic design service for the annual dinner, Christmas party and magazine cover.

Mike’s interest in the performing side of the art is as a comedy magician and he has won The Magi Comedy Trophy competition on two occasions under the name of Mick The Trick.

Mike said: “Being elected president in the first place is an honour in itself.

“Now in my second term I thank the membership for the confidence they have placed in me again and will do my utmost to live up to their expectations.”

Details of the society can be found on www.orderofthemagi.org.uk and applications from magicians whether professional, semi-professional or amateur, are welcomed.
