Superfast broadband down the tram lines
Date published: 29 March 2011
COUNCIL chiefs say they remain committed to bringing superfast broadband to Oldham along the Metrolink line.
Cables are due to be installed along the tram route that would give Oldham a boost by attracting businesses needing access to state-of-the-art technology.
But a lack of progress has led to concerns over whether the new generation broadband will be delivered.
When council chief executive Charlie Parker answered Chronicle readers’ questions in our “Hotseat” feature earlier this year he spoke about how beneficial the superfast broadband will be. He said: “This will stimulate investment in new 21st century businesses and creating high-quality knowledge based jobs.”
Councillor John McCann, cabinet member for regeneration and environment, said: “The council is currently actively working to develop the business case to identify how we will fund the new generation broadband.
“We are not aware of any problems.”
