Betty’s a red daredevil!

A DAREDEVIL Oldham great-grandmother braved great heights for charity —and then wanted to do the zip wire slide all over again.

Betty Meredith soared through the skies on a 620ft zip wire across Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium to raise money for the Christie Hospital.

The 75-year-old Garden Suburb gran said: “It was great. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had a good group of supporters that went along to cheer me on. It was fantastic and I had a super day.

“I would have got back on there and then for another go but they wouldn’t let me!”

Betty has so far raised £600 in sponsorship with more money to collect that she hopes will push her total to £700.

She took inspiration from Oldham-born footballer David May, who made more than 100 appearances for the Reds and was part of the famous treble-winning squad in 1999.

He had pledged to take part to raise money for the Christie and the pair were among 180 charity champions who hurtled from the west stand to the east stand across the “Theatre of Dreams” at speeds of up to 25mph.

The plucky widow, who has two children, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and ran the family bakery business all her working life, still enjoys playing golf at Werneth Golf Club, is a regular swimmer and attends weekly dances.

She added: “I suppose I am a daredevil. It’s been in my nature from climbing trees as a child.”

Betty refused to let two hip replacement operations deter her and, having previously completed a charity abseil at the famous stadium, the Manchester United fan wasn’t put off by the height.

“The abseil was higher up on the roof so I was pleasantly surprised to see the zip wire wasn’t as high up,” she said. “I would really like to thank everyone that sponsored me. I’m delighted with what I’ve raised for such a good cause.”
