A SPARKLING array of international stars will descend on the borough this summer as Saddleworth’s Festival of the Arts returns.

Organisers are urging locals to help make the event, which runs from June 4-12, one of the best ever.

The Orchestra of the Swan will open proceedings, BBC presenter George Alagiah (pictured right) will give a talk about his global investigations and comedy legend Barry Cryer will premier a brand new show.

Organisers are keen to see a raft of supporters sign up as patrons for the 14th such event, held just once every four years.

At a cost of £90 per person, patronage provides tickets for up to eight events and priority booking before April 16.

Patrons will also receive a complimentary souvenir programme and an invitation to the patrons’ reception before the opening concert.

Greenfield resident David Illingworth, a member of the Saddleworth Musical Society, has already signed up this year.

He said: “I’ve been involved for over 30 years. I remember singing at the first ever festival.

“I think it’s important that as many local people as possible, young and old, get behind the festival and support it.

“It really mixes our local heritage with national and international stars and I’m pleased to be able to play my part in helping it to take place.”

Drama, films, musical theatre, brass concerts and a wide range of exhibitions also make up the brimming line-up, with community walks and open gardens also on the bill.

Organiser Geoff Roberts said: “Saddleworth is an area where so much goes on, the festival showcases that and gels the whole thing together.

“This year we have widened the appeal and the range of interest but strived to retain the mix and serve the many local groups.

“The support of patrons and sponsors is vital.”
