A ROUTINE eye examination carried out by an Oldham optician has helped to save the sight of an Ashton man.
Mark Johnson (41), an electrical wholesale manager, had been experiencing vision problems and booked an appointment at Specsavers in Curzon Street.
Optometrist Riaz Mohammed identified a detached retina in his left eye and immediately referred him to the Royal Oldham Hospital. Had it been left undetected for only two more days it could have left him blind in that eye.
Mr Johnson said: “I had noticed an almost dark curtain over my left eye which lasted for nearly two days so I knew I needed to have it seen to by an optician.”
At the hospital, Mr Mohammed’s suspicions were confirmed Mr Johnson was told he needed emergency surgery to prevent blindness. Surgeons also operated on the right eye to ensure the condition would not re-occur.
Mr Johnson said: “I’m so grateful to Mr Mohammed for spotting the problem quickly and taking such fast action.”
