Rip it up and start again... and again

Deja Vu . . . resurfacing work for the fourth time in Lees Road
MOTORISTS faced more misery when Lees Road was shut in the latest step in a resurfacing saga.
The section of road between Clarksfield Road and Moorhey Street now has a patchwork-quilt effect due to contractors ripping up unsatisfactory sections of the road and resurfacing it yet again.
Parts of the roadway have now been re-laid four times after council officers decided the finish was substandard.
The original work was finished towards the end of last year, but officers were not satisfied the material used was of the correct specification and were worried about how long it would last.
Councillor John McCann, cabinet member for regeneration and environment, said he understood motorists’ frustration with the turn of events, adding: “We share their sentiments as this is the fourth time we have had to close this stretch of carriageway and carry out resurfacing work.
“As an authority we would have been failing in our duty to provide good quality roads for residents and motorists, and ensuring value for money, if we did not act.”
Councillor McCann said the cost of the work was being met by the suppliers, and no expense would be laid at the feet of council taxpayers.
He thanked motorists for their patience during the work which was carried out over the past two Sundays in a bid to keep disruption to a minimum.
