Party time to mark the royal wedding

Date published: 14 April 2011

ROYAL-LOVING locals will be hanging out the bunting and showing their community spirit as they celebrate the wedding of the year.

The regal nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton are just two weeks away and excitement is growing as organisers of street parties and other events prepare for the big day on Friday, April 29.

Oldham Council has granted permission for six road closures as part of the day, including giving the green light for the Yorkshire Street party in the town centre.

Caroline Devanzo, manager at the Squire Knott, is organising the family-fun party set to include steel drums, arts and crafts, facepainting and a BBQ.

She said: “The amount of people who have got involved in this has been fantastic, we even got a call from a woman in Spain who wanted to attend an English street party.

“We’re proud of everyone coming together. I’m so excited about the whole thing.”

Residents on Chetwyn street in Royton, Near Birches Parade in Holts Village and Hutchins Lane, Watersheddings, will be out partying in the streets after receiving official permission.

Mum-of-four Alyson Bentley, who is arranging the event in Hutchins Lane, she said: “Some people may have only smiled at each other on the street, this will give them a chance to meet and have a great time.

“My mum did one for the Queen’s jubilee and the pictures of everyone out in the street is something we’d love to re-create.”

A party in the park will see a knees-up to remember as residents team up with Contour Homes for a celebration at Limeside Park.

And it’s not just the royal couple who will be getting those pre-wedding nerves on April 29.

Bride and grooms across the borough are making final preparations to say “I do” at the same time. Diana Paver is tying the knot with fiancé Kevin O’Rourke at the White Hart in Lydgate.

She said: “We booked it over a year ago because it was in the school holidays, we thought it was quite exciting when Wills and Kate announced their date. We’ll certainly never forget our wedding anniversary.”

Not ones to miss out on the action, schools are staging mock weddings, discos and tea parties to mark the occasion, while community centres will also be brimming with celebratory events on the day.
