DRIVERS are being warned to prepare themselves for traffic disruption as work to bring Metrolink to Oldham gathers pace.
From Monday, the bottom of King Street, next to Union Street, will be closed for up to five weeks due to roadworks set to last for around 10 weeks.
This will enable underground power cables, water pipes, gas pipes and phone lines to be diverted away from the route of the new tram lines.
All traffic from the main Spindles car park exit, George Street and Barn Street will turn right into King Street during the closure. Once King Street re-opens, Union Street West will be closed at its junction with King Street for around four weeks.
Work around Mumps roundabout will take place from May 12 over five days.
Nine signs are situated around the town centre and a mobile electronic notice, currently stationed in King Street, will keep drivers up to date with the work.
Firms have been given posters to let people know that Oldham is “open for business as usual” while the work takes place.
Around 3,500 letters have been sent to residents and businesses in Oldham town centre detailing the latest phases of work, including the King Street closure.
A website has been set up showing road travel alerts and areas of congestion.
Oldham Council’s deputy leader Jackie Stanton said: “We’re not going to have a major construction project without some disruption — it will be worth it in the end.”
