RELIEF! The main road through Delph village re-opens on Sunday, two weeks ahead of schedule.

United Utilities has been carrying out major flood relief work on the sewers in Denshaw Road.

By Sunday, engineers will have replaced a 100m section of old sewer with a new wider one, which will be able to take more stormwater during heavy rain.

There will now be no closure of Denshaw Road planned for Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, June 5, as work there will not be needed.

The project to build a new sewer overflow chamber will continue as planned, between Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, September 4.

Tess Smith, United Utilities project manager, explained: “We have made fantastic progress — the dry weather has been really kind to us, both before and during the work. It has meant the ground conditions have been ideal.

“Not only that, the underground layout of the existing sewers and other utilities has been very straightforward, making our job so much easier. This is unusual as we always have to allow for complications when we apply for a permit to work in the road.

“Our team has worked very hard and we promised we would not keep the road closed a day longer than necessary.”
