A HEALTH boss is swapping budgets for swimming baths as he prepares to take the plunge to raise money for cancer patients.
Stephen Sutcliffe, director of finance at NHS Oldham, which runs health services in the borough, has signed up for this year’s Great Salford Swim to raise money for The Christie Hospital, in Manchester.
The one-mile open water challenge takes place on May 15 in Salford Quays and sees elite swimmers and fundraisers alike participate with over 2,000 people taking the plunge last year.
Mr Sutcliffe (39) has worked at NHS Oldham for eight years and is responsible for finance, IT, performance and the estate. He previously worked at Alder Hey and Aintree Hospitals in his 18-year NHS career.
He said: “The Christie is a fantastic place that we should be so proud to have on our doorstep.
“Because of my role I have a close relationship with The Christie and never cease to be amazed by the work I see whenever I visit the hospital.
“Because of that I want to do my bit and raise money to help The Christie in its fight against cancer.
“Working where I do, I know that more and more people are beating the disease, but I also know that public support is vital in achieving this.
“I’ve always thought about swimming the English Channel so I see the Great Salford Swim as a bit of a stepping stone and hope to raise as much money as possible.

“As clichéd as it sounds, every penny really does help.”
