Macmillan Have a Good Day appeal
MACMILLAN supporter Teresa Karran is urging people to join her as she takes to the streets in aid of the “Have a Good Day” campaign.

The charity’s development manager for Oldham wants Chronicle readers to sign up alongside her for the Great Manchester Run.

She said: “Every day in my job, I work with the nurses and service professionals who are directly helping people affected by cancer.

“It is my role to make sure that Oldham is receiving the full range of services that it needs Macmillan to fund.

“Being able to give something back by taking on the run and raising much-needed funds is a real honour for me.”

There are still a few places left on the Macmillan team which will raise money to give a good day to someone in Oldham who has cancer.

It costs just £369 to do that, and the Chronicle is supporting the charity in a campaign to make a difference to the lives of as many Oldham people as possible who are living with cancer.

The 10k run takes place on Sunday, May 15, and passes some of Manchester’s most prominent landmarks.

Local fundraiser Rose Tipton said: “We are looking for anyone who wants to take on the challenge of the run, while also raising money for people affected by cancer.

“This year we are asking people to help fund a grant through the campaign.

“Last year Macmillan spent in excess of £47,202 helping more than 128 people from the Oldham area.

“The average grant is £369 and helps people to have a good day when they are dealing with the affects of cancer.

“By joining Team Macmillan for the Great Manchester Run you can do your bit to give someone a good day,” added Rose.

Anyone who wants to join the team, or who is already running and wants to donate sponsorship to the “Have a Good Day” campaign can contact Rose on 01925-846 753 or email o rtipton@macmillan.org.uk.

How to apply
A Macmillan grant is a one-off payment to help people with cancer “Have a Good Day.” It can help pay for anything from heating bills and extra clothing, to a much-needed break, or helping people continue with activities they enjoy.

Anyone who has cancer, or is still affected by the illness or treatment, can apply, but must have no more than £6,000 in savings as a single person, or £8,000 as a couple or family.

Disposable income needs to be under £100 per person in the house, once bills have been paid. Disability living allowance or attendance allowance do not count as disposable income.

Applications for a grant should be made through a health or social-care professional, such as a social worker, district nurse, or a Macmillan nurse, and must include a short medical report from a doctor, consultant or Macmillan nurse.

Approved grants are usually sent out within three working days. For more information contact the Macmillan Cancer Support helpline, on freephone 0808-808 0000.
