EMOTIONAL tributes were paid to Councillor Bob Birse, who celebrated the culmination of 39 years’ representing the people of Saddleworth.

In the last meeting before the parish council elections on May 5, thanks was given to councillors who have chosen to stand down.

Councillors praised Bob, who joined the urban district council in 1972 and is one of the longest-serving parish councillors in the borough.

Members thanked him for his efforts as head of the planning committee and his instrumental role in starting up the conservation committee.

Councillor John Hudson said: “Bob will be missed because he has so much experience. People have voted for him for the person he is and he’s done a lot of good work.”

Also marking their last meeting with the parish were chairman Keith Begley, Phil Renold, Andrew Hodgkiss, Phil Davenport, Phil Bagley and Anne Parry.

Departing members make up over a third of the total 20 seats up for re-election.

Councillor Brian Lord said: “There will be a breath of fresh of air on the council and there could be major change, we thank all members for their efforts.”

A ST George’s celebration held at Uppermill Civic Hall managed to raise more than £2,000 for charity.
Organiser John Hudson presented council chairman Keith Begley with a cheque for £1,010 for his chosen charities. The rest of the money will go to the Oldham Mayor’s appeal fund.

The outgoing chairman will present his charities and local causes with donations during a special ceremony on Monday, May 16.
