WOMEN are being urged to lace up their running shoes and boost low numbers at Oldham’s Race for Life this summer.

A total of 433 competitors have signed up to the event on Wednesday, July 6, only 17 per cent of the 2,500 target.

This time last year, 898 fun-runners had signed up and all 2,000 places were full by race day.

Anyone thinking about taking part in the all-female event is being urged to sign up, start training and help boost funds for Cancer Research UK.

Starting the countdown will be Chadderton cancer survivor Jacky Howard. She will be guest of honour at the 5k event and sound the starting horn.

The 26-year-old was diagnosed with cervical cancer last May following her first routine smear test. Only two months after receiving her diagnosis, Jacky took part in the Race for Life event at Alexandra Park with a group of family and friends, raising more than £700.

She is now encouraging other women to follow her lead by taking up the charity challenge.

Jacky, who lives with partner Scott Green and works as a hairdresser in Chadderton, said: “I was devastated to be diagnosed with cancer at such a young age. But, thanks to research, I am still here. I am so grateful for the treatment that saved my life. Success stories like mine would not be possible without the work of Cancer Research UK, which in turn relies on everyone who raises money through Race for Life. I hope other women will be inspired to enter Race for Life in Oldham as well as inviting their friends, sisters, mothers, daughters and colleagues to sign up.”

When Race for Life started in 1994, many people diagnosed with cancer did not survive. Since then, money generated has supported Cancer Research UK’s work. Now, more sufferers are beating the disease than ever before.

Laura Taylor, Race for Life event manager for Oldham, said: “Race for Life is a unique celebration of sisterhood and pride. The atmosphere is amazing, with local women from all walks of life coming together to make a positive difference to those affected by cancer. They motivate and inspire each other to complete the course with many simply walking round, chatting and having fun.”
