Ziggy’s store can now no longer sell alcohol
A SHOPKEEPER has been banned from selling booze in a bid to stop drunk youths running wild on the streets of Failsworth.

Oldham Council’s licensing panel ruled that Ziggy’s, in Propps Hall Drive, can no longer sell alcohol after owner Khasaf Jhangir was found to have repeatedly breached his licence conditions.

Alcohol and cigarettes that did not have the correct UK duty tax on them were found at the shop on two occasions by trading standards officers.

Mr Jhangir also failed to hand over CCTV footage when asked and failed to make sure that all bottles and cans of alcohol he sold bore a label with the shop’s name on it. The conditions of the licence stated that Mr Jhangir, who took over the running of the shop from his father, Mohammed Jhangir, in September, 2010, should be on the premises at all times during opening hours, but he was not present when trading standards officers visited on several occasions.

Geraldine Cooper, divisional licensing officer for Oldham Police, told the panel that she supported the application to revoke Ziggy’s licence.

She said: “Anti-social behaviour is likely to continue around this area of Failsworth as a result of the poor running of this shop.

“Residents are suffering and the only way to stop this is to revoke the licence of shops that are not being run properly.”

The panel approved an application from Tesco’s Failsworth store to extend the hours during which alcohol can be sold despite problems with youths congregating on the car park at weekends. Store manager Adrian Pasquet admitted that there was a problem but told the panel about ways Tesco had attempted to solve it.
