Infamous moorland road claims another victim
AN off-duty detective from Chadderton has been killed in a motorbike crash on the infamous Isle of Skye road.
Graham Lyne (47), a fraud investigator for Greater Manchester Police, was in collision with a Vauxhall Corsa on the A635 in Saddleworth at 11.05am yesterday.
Det Sgt Lyne died at the scene. The occupants of the car were uninjured, but were treated for shock.
Police at the mini roundabout by the Clarence Hotel, shut Holmfirth Road, diverting through traffic. Vehicles were allowed to access Dovestone Reservoir. There was also a block on the Yorkshire side of Holmfirth Road.
One eyewitness said he saw the biker lying close to the front wheels of a vehicle.
He said: “There were masses of police, ambulances and firefighters swarming about the place.
“The motorbike was on its side near a fence..”
DS Lyne, who was based at Nexus House in Ashton, had recently been part of the team which jailed a former police officer who had fraudulently netted £500,000 from a bank.
Holmfirth Road is known for being treacherous, and there have been numerous fatal accidents over the years. Anyone who witnessed yesterday’s incident is asked to call the Road Policing Unit on 0161-856 8473.
