A POLITICAL first-timer is keeping it in the family and joining her grandmother in her quest for parish election success.

At the tender age of 21, Natalie Wolstenhulme has more experience with local politics than most her age.

Interested in local issues since she was seven, Natalie would take to streets as a tot to help deliver election leaflets for the Conservative party alongside her grandmother Edna Wolstenhulme.

Now she is hitting the campaign trail at the same time as her gran.

She said: “I’ve spent a lot of time with my grandma and it has obviously rubbed off on me.

“I used to go along to the election count as a child.”

Natalie graduated last year with a psychology degree from the University of Huddersfield.

Her first taste of election success was when she was voted vice president at the university, a job she has fulfilled since.

Natalie is standing in the Springhead Lower ward, while Edna is fighting against 12 others in the Greenfield ward.

Despite representing the same party, the blue duo’s love for politics ensures plenty of debate around the dining table.

Natalie, of Smith Street, Lees, said: “We’ve a great relationship but we have quite different views — especially me being against cuts in education spending. It can get heated but our family is used to that.”

Edna, (71), said: “I’m so proud of her and this is a wonderful opportunity for Natalie, but she’s not just following me, it’s been her thing since she was little. We’re both at opposite ends of the ladder but we have this in common which is great.”

Natalie says she aims one day to make it to Westminster.
