OLDHAM and Saddleworth Green Party believes the current programme of cuts is politically motivated rather than economically driven.
Green Party councillors will not support any cut to public services which has not had an equality impact assessment, as required under the Equalities Act.
The borough’s leisure centres support the health and community cohesion of the population. Leisure centres offer a positive option and establish the habit of healthy living. Fees should be frozen for two years.
The Green Party supports the 20s Plenty campaign to introduce a 20mph speed limit on residential roads. We would look to extend cycle training and the Cycle to Work programme, which provides discounts for cyclists. All public buildings should include facilities for storing bicycles.
There have been unacceptable delays in dealing with empty council properties. This is a blight and encourages vandalism.
More resources should be devoted to Empty Property Management Orders to minimise the length of time a house is empty.
The waste collection system should be simplified and the authority should ensure it is not fined for failing to meet recycling targets.
Independent businesses are crucial to the vitality of a local area. The council should work with traders and umbrella bodies to ensure their security.
