Police car crashes on way to blaze

Two police officers were hurt in a high-speed crash in Kings Road, Oldham — while answering an emergency call to a house fire.

An investigation has now been launched into the accident which left the officers slightly injured and caused significant damage to the police patrol car.

The accident was at 7.30am on Sunday and police said the officer lost control of the patrol car, a Ford Focus, while responding to reports that someone was trapped in a house fire.

The vehicle went up a grass embankment before colliding with a tree at the bottom of Honeywell Lane, causing significant damage to both.

Damage was also caused to a silver Mercedes vehicle parked on the road.

An onlooker said: “If it wasn’t for the police car hitting the tree, it would have been sure to go through the front of the house.”

Both officers inside suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment but have since been discharged. No one else was injured in the incident.

In line with normal procedure, the police driver has been suspended from driving duties while an investigation is carried out.
