Psychiatrist warned for misconduct

A PSYCHIATRIST who gave prescriptions to his wife and two other people who were not his patients has been told he can continue to practise his profession.

Dr Abiodun Jackson Agara (47) has been handed a warning by the General Medical Council following a two-day hearing in Manchester.

A panel found that writing prescriptions to people who were not his patients had amounted to misconduct and his fitness to practise had been impaired at the time.

He was accused of giving the prescriptions at a time which included when he worked as a consultant at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

But it said his current fitness to practise was not impaired and he posed no significant risk of repeating his behaviour in future. The warning will be on his record for five years.

Dr Agara told the panel: “I think I have learned my lesson. I would be a foolish person or an outright criminal to go back doing these things. I’m just telling you it was done in error. I did not set out to defraud the NHS.”
