Kwok Wong begins his firewalk
Walk on the fiery side raises £1,000
IT WAS out of the frying pan and into the fire for one popular chip shop owner.
Kwok Wong (41), from Ree Ming Chippy, in Oldham Road, Royton, walked across hot coals and glass to raise money for children’s charity Post Pals.
The event, at Lancashire Cricket Club’s Old Trafford ground, saw sponsored daredevils walk or run across a 26ft line of burning hot coals.
Kwok said: “I have to raise money for charity. I am so lucky to have two healthy children and there are a lot of people out there who are not so fortunate. So I like to do what I can to help.”
The dad-of-two decided to raise cash for Post Pals when he read about three-year-old Ella from Rochdale, who suffers with congenital nephrotic syndrome — a rare genetic condition resulting in kidney failure.
He decided to help the charity, which encourages people to send letters to children with serious illnesses.
Kwok said: “I was very nervous because I have done some crazy things, but never this before. I was getting a bit worried when we were doing the training and we had to break arrows on our throats!
“On average it took each person three to four steps to cross over. I was last to go so I thought I’d take the pain and do seven steps.
“It felt weird, like walking in nettles, but as soon as I got off the flames I could feel burning on my feet.
“I ended up with seven blisters, but this pain was nothing compared with the sick children in hospital.
“Ella has a low immune system and has spent many nights in intensive care. She’s a happy little girl but her illness takes a toll on her.”
Kwok, who lives in Royton, thanked all his customers and friends for their support, which helped him raise £1,000.
Last year he collected £1,750 for the Aplastic Anaemia Trust by doing a skydive, and next year he is hoping to do a skywalk — and Coronation Street’s Sunita Alahan (Shobna Gulati) has already vowed to do it with him.
