THERE were no surprises at Shaw and Crompton Parish Council as Liberal Democrats remained in control, with the addition of one independent candidate.

In the north ward there were wins for retired policeman John Aspinall (Lib-Dem) and Angie Farrell (Lib-Dem), who returned from a break after serving on the parish between 1991 and 2007.

Newcomer Susan Eckersley (left), who has been long been campaigning with Crompton Hall Action Group, was extremely pleased to be elected for the first time, while Conservative David Dunning was re-elected.

In the west ward, re-elected Lib-Dem Mike Dodd and new party colleague Marjory Robinson thanked everyone who went to the polls to vote for them.

Independent candidate David Bibby took third place ahead of current Lib-Dem Coucnillor Sajjed Taseem.

He said: “I thought I might get in and I’m very pleased. I work with an agent for the council so I feel I can help people in my ward. I have a strong interest in older people so I look forward to learning about my ward and making some good changes.”

Angie Farrell (right) said: “I am delighted to get back to help people. I want to help improve and provide facilities for young people and to encourage disabled people to take up council positions.”

Parish councillors who stood down were Simon Farrell, Hazel Gloster, Diane Williamson, Mari Wiswell and Ken Wingate.

There was no vote in the south and east wards, and the following Lib-Dem candidates were elected unopposed:

South: Rod Blyth, David Murphy and John Wood.

East: Mark Alcock, John Hall and Howard Sykes.

Constitution: Lib-Dem 11, Con 1, Ind 1
