Local Newspaper Week

THIS week is Local Newspaper Week and all week we are highlighting the many ways in which the Chronicle impacts on the life of the borough and its people.

And one way in which we play a big part is in publicising the many worthwhile charitable causes and campaigns that go on year after year.

The Chronicle has itself fronted several worthy appeals including hospital campaigns for the MRI and CT scanners and the recently successful £100,000 Christie Oldham appeal which saw the monies raised in record time thanks to the generosity of Oldhamers.

That giving nature also saw readers put on their sports shirts in our “Kit it Out for Kershaw’s” appeal to raise enough money to fully upgrade a minibus for use by the Royton hospice.

And only last summer the Chronicle and Dr Kershaw’s linked up again for a fundraiser that not only borught in much-needed money but also put a smile on the faces of people all over the world.

The focus of the fun was a cuddly meerkat which the hospice was selling to raise money and the animals were soon flying off the shelves when it was decided to run snapshots of “Alex” on his travels in the Chronicle.

Readers packed their new-found friend and took him to destinations all over the world — raising a smile and several thousands of pounds for Dr Kershaw’s in the process.

Your Chronicle — at the heart of the community.
