TWO scouting stalwarts have been honoured for their sterling service.

County treasurer and president of Crompton and Royton Scout District, Ossie Millar, was awarded the Bar to the Silver Acorn, one of the highest awards in scouting, for his continued distinguished service.

And newly-appointed district commissioner of Oldham, Ian Temple-Heald was presented with a 25-years long-service award.

The awards were made by Oldham Mayor, Councillor David Jones and county commissioner John Woolley in a presentation at the Mayor’s parlour.

Mr Millar has served in a variety of positions since joining the movement in 1954 as an assistant scout leader in Nottingham. From 1972 to 2005 he was secretary in Crompton and Royton and became county treasurer in 1997.

He is also an active member of Crompton and Royton Rotary Club with specific interest in arranging sponsored visits for underprivileged young people from abroad. He said: “I’m very grateful of the support they have given to the scouting in the district. I also owe much of my success to the support of my family.”

Meanwhile, local scouts are busy fundraising and attending a series of training meetings and camps in preparation for the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in Sweden from July 27 to August 7, when there will be 38,000 participants from 217 countries. Also among those meeting the Mayor were Oldham explorer scouts Frances Taylor and Tyler Goodyer, who will be off to the event with Oldham World Jamboree unit leader Neil Kayley.
