Callous drivers veered round dying M-way man

A DRIVER told how she watched in horror as motorists swerved around an Oldham man lying in a motorway with fatal injuries — and simply drove on.

Laura Warmoth was travelling to work and was leaving the M60 near junction six in Sale when she came across the accident.

Recovery driver Denis Livesley of Gowram Park, Leesbrook, had been hit by a Volkswagen Golf while loading a Volvo, which had skidded on ice, on his truck.

Mrs Warmoth told Stockport coroner’s court that drivers were slowing to avoid the 60-year-old, who was lying face down in the inside lane of the slip road, but no-one was stopping.

“It was horrific,” she said. “I couldn’t believe my eyes as I witnessed motorists manoeuvring around him and driving off.

“They had little or no regard for the man. It appeared all they were bothered about was getting past and getting on their journey.”

Mrs Warmoth said she stopped her car at an angle to block the traffic and went over to Mr Livesley who was motionless.

Other passers-by, including a nurse, eventually did stop to help and an ambulance crew arrived but Mr Livesley was pronounced dead on arrival at Trafford General Hospital.

The accident happened on the morning of December 21, 2009.
