United star backs contest
A COMPETITION fronted by football legend Paul Scholes is searching for the borough’s new app superstar
Oldham’s App-rentice is giving 14 to 19-year-olds the chance to invent a mobile phone application.
The winner will bag an iPad 2 — presented and signed by Manchester United star Paul Scholes — and a masterclass for their entire class with app experts and developers, FundedApps. They could also see their idea become reality.
The project aims to promote innovation and enterprise and Paul, who lives in Grasscroft, said: “The development of apps is an area which seems to present a rapidly growing opportunity for the younger generation.
“I’m looking forward to meeting the winner and presenting them with their prize.”
The competition is organised by FundedApps and Oldham Council, and was launched at the recent Oldham Enterprise Game event.
It is supported by Michael Edelson, the Oldham-born director of Manchester United.
He said: “Many children, some of whom may struggle with traditional academic subjects, find real inspiration in invention.
“That’s why it’s so important that they’re encouraged to explore the world of innovation from an early age.
“Oldham’s App-rentice gives them a fantastic opportunity to do this in a competitive arena.”
Jamie Lyons, executive director at FundedApps, added: “Mobile technology has really taken off so we were eager to develop a competition which encouraged the next generation to explore this growing industry.”
