SO happy together, Cyril and Aimee with their card from the Queen
Childhood sweethearts from Shaw have celebrated 65 years of wedded bliss.
Cyril (85) and Aimee (84) Farnworth, of Bidston Close, first met at Grange Road Sunday School and then both went to Chadderton Grammar School.
But Aimee, who went off to work at Crompton Library, said she had to wait her turn to go out with Cyril as he was very popular with the ladies.
Cyril said: “I used to cross the road when I saw her because she used to tell me what to do, but on her afternoon off I turned up at the library to take her out on a date to Oldham’s Palladium — to which she obliged.”
After serving over three years with the Royal Marines, Cyril popped the question and the happy couple tied the knot at St James Church, East Crompton on May 18, 1946.
The couple, who have two children, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, have enjoyed a very active life.
Cyril has had a season ticket at Latics for 40 years, has been a committee member at Oldham Rugby Club for eight years and still acts as president of the Royal British Legion in Shaw.
He was a popular pianist with the group Rocker Fellers and used to tour with them across the north.
Aimee enjoyed working at Medlock Manufacturing as an office manageress and later became an accomplished artist, holding several exhibitions.
The couple, who have raised thousands of pounds for different charities, recall being invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace.
The blue sapphire anniversary couple got lots of cards and a special one from the Queen.
Aimee said: “I want to thank all of our friends, family and associates for supporting and involving us over the years, which helps to keep us very young!”
Mr and Mrs Farnworth celebrated with a meal at the Roebuck.
